A long-time Weston resident and a neighbor of The Cambridge School of Weston, Inge Uhlir, has made a generous donation to the school for the purchase and framing of a print of a world-renowned painting by John Singer Sargent. The painting features the family of Fiske Warren, the late philanthropist for which the school’s Warren House dormitory was named.
The painting, which features Warren’s wife Gretchen Osgood and their daughter Rachel, was hung in the common room of Warren House during a small ceremony in late April attended by Head of School Jane Moulding and the dorm’s current dorm parents to show appreciation for Uhlir’s generous donation. The original painting hangs in the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum in Boston.
“The Cambridge School of Weston has been a very supportive neighbor,” Uhlir said. “One of the things we have all been pleased with are the public programs, dances, and interesting things the Cambridge School has opened up to the Weston community.”
Uhlir says she made the donation for a specific reason, to help support the artistic talents of the CSW students. “My real purpose was to have the students be aware of the fact that [the Warren family] are patrons of the arts,” she said. Uhlir also made the donation to support the Warren family and all that they have done for the Weston community. Specifically, she appreciates the work that they had undergone to create a farming community in Weston that continues to thrive today, offering classes and services to members of the town.
Moulding had known of Uhlir for a long time before the donation. Uhlir had come to many of the school’s public showings to show support for the student performances and the art.
“She’s lived there for a long time, she’s very active in the community,” Moulding said. “She consistently comes to all our performances and shows.
Moulding very much appreciated the donation, and is extremely grateful for the contributions that Uhlir has made to the school, and to the Weston community at large. “Her donation was very nice,” Moulding said. She hopes that through this donation, students will continue to grow their appreciation for the arts, and realize the significance of their work.
Uhlir intends to continue supporting the schools endeavors, and expects even more great things from the school. “Weston is one of the best places to live, and the The Cambridge School of Weston makes it that.”
Inge Uhlir, a neighbor and friend of CSW, funded the purchase and framing of a famous John Singer Sargent portrait of Gretchen Osgood Warren (Fiske Warren's wife) and their daughter, Rachel.
The original portrait of Mrs. Warren and her daughter hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
