Lise's Lens: October 12, 2023

This week I am thinking about the conflict in the Middle East, reading an article on habits for happiness, and listening to a panel discussion on the mental health crisis in the U.S.

WHAT I’M READING

  • I really enjoyed this article by leadership expert and coach Marcel Schwantes explaining how “3 Habits Determine Your Overall Happiness.” I appreciate the simplicity of the piece and the practical advice it offers, much of which can be tied to basic common sense. He suggests people think about three daily practices:
  1. Taking care of mind and body
  2. Downtime
  3. Love

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT

  • Of course, my thoughts are very much still on the conflict in the Middle East and all of those affected. Thank you to everyone who read my statement and took the time to share your insights. You have given me much to think about as our community continues to navigate this horrendous situation.

WHAT I'M WATCHING/LISTENING TO

  • Earlier this month, Dartmouth hosted a historic gathering of US surgeons general to discuss the topic of mental health in the United States. This occasion marked the first time in 25 years that all the living surgeons general past and present have convened in one place around a common purpose, and then consensus was clear: the United States is facing a mental health crisis. You can watch a recording of the panel here. It is long, but worth a watch. CNN also has published a comprehensive summary of the discussion.

WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

Our Jazz Ensemble put on an amazing performance featuring the music of Wayne Shorter.

Many thanks to student photographers Noah Burd '24 and Eli Bowen '24 for the excellent photography.
