Math Courses

Foundations in Algebra

Grades 9-10
Mini Module Session 1 (July 7 - July 25, 2025)

CSW is thrilled to offer summer math courses in Foundations in Algebra for incoming 9th and 10th graders as well as geometry for rising 10th graders. These 3-week courses are designed to help students strengthen their math skills, meet their goals in enrolling in their desired future math courses, and provide lots of feedback, connection, extensions, and camp-style fun along the way.

The summer Foundations in Algebra course at CSW is designed for students looking to strengthen their algebra skills before their school year courses begin. This distilled version of algebra 1 focuses on the key topics needed to excel in the future math curriculum, including work with variables, exponents, and radicals, functions and transformations, linear functions and modeling, and quadratic functions and equations. Successful completion of summer Foundations in Algebra allows students to place out of algebra 1 and into geometry or algebra 2 for the subsequent school year. Students, especially incoming students, are also invited to take algebra 1 before enrolling in algebra 2 even if their placement does not necessarily indicate a need, in order to strengthen their skills and confidence in math, gain familiarity with CSW math curricula, get to know CSW teachers and fellow students, and enjoy enhancing their math abilities in a focused, fun, and non-grade-centric environment.

Geometry Enrichment

Grades 10-11
Mini Module Session 2 (July 28 - August 15, 2025)

The summer geometry course at CSW is designed for rising 10th or 11th students looking to complete geometry before enrolling in algebra 2 and beyond during their subsequent school years. This shortened version of geometry focuses on lines and angles, symmetry and proof, circles, areas, and volumes, and right triangle trigonometry.  Successful completion of summer geometry allows students to place out of geometry and into algebra 2 and potentially precalculus courses for the subsequent school year. Incoming students are also invited to take summer geometry even if their placement does not necessarily indicate a need, in order to strengthen their skills and confidence in geometry, gain familiarity with CSW math curricula, get to know CSW teachers and fellow students, and enjoy doing math in a focused, fun, and non-grade-centric environment.

FAQs for Families

List of 5 frequently asked questions.

  • How do I know if my student can or should take Geometry Enrichment?

Students who took algebra 1 their 9th grade year and are interested in accelerating their math studies, including taking calculus courses their senior year, are ideal students for the summer geometry course. Successful completion of summer geometry will allow students to enroll in algebra 2 during the following school year. Students may also take summer geometry before their geometry course, especially if there are skills in geometry that they are less familiar or confident with.
  • Can my student take both Foundations in Algebra and Geometry Enrichment this summer?

No. Our courses are designed for students to fully immerse in one subject in their summer studies, and time after the course to process the material and continue practice is important for future success. If students are unsure which course would be most beneficial for their learning and future coursework at CSW, they should consult the math department for a recommendation.
  • Will summer coursework appear on my student’s CSW transcript?

As summer courses are delivered and assessed differently from school-year CSW courses, each student’s record of their summer studies will be included as an attachment to their transcripts when applying to colleges or otherwise sending their records to other institutions, rather than appearing as a credit on their CSW transcript.
  • How do I know if my student can or should take Foundations in Algebra?

Students whose transcripts or placement test indicate that they have not yet fully mastered the skills of algebra 1 should take this course if they would like to begin their school year in geometry rather than algebra 1. Students are also invited to take Foundations in Algebra to revisit concepts before enrolling in algebra 2, especially if their algebra 1 experience was a while ago or if they are not feeling confident on the material. Enrollment in this course may also be recommended or required by the admissions office to ensure future success in CSW’s program.
  • Do these courses fulfill CSW’s mathematics credit requirements?

Currently, CSW students must study through algebra 2, as well as at least one additional elective course in mathematics beyond the algebra 2 level. It is also recommended that students study mathematics each year of their enrollment at CSW. These requirements are not affected by summer coursework. Summer classes would simply allow students to enroll in either geometry or algebra 2 earlier than they would otherwise.
